My hands are shaking, and my face is warm after the altercation with Katie. I leaned against the body of the tractor and covered my face. How could someone be so insanely beautiful and so insanely careless? She strikes me as someone that should know better but she doesn’t act like it.

If I hadn’t coincidentally looked in front while I was working, I could have run her over and…

I can’t bear to think about what that would have meant. I hear someone walking over to where I am, and I turn to see who it is.

“What’s going on boss?” she asks, and I heave a sigh.

The day isn’t over yet, and I feel so exhausted.

“Katie was out here in the snow, and I nearly ran over her with the tractor,” I tell her.

“Jesus, what the fuck,” Marv curses and it takes me by surprise.

“Now that’s a new one,” I say to her.

“Sorry about that, is Katie okay?”

“Yeah, she just got really cold and I… I yelled at her,” I confess.

I don’t feel bad for the things I said, I just don’t like that I let my emotions get the best of me.

“I didn’t think you would be this soft, seeing as you’re all gruff and buff,” Marv teases.

I feel this overwhelming need to talk to someone about the things that have been happening in my head and Marv is the only one on the farm that would even remotely get it. She’s the only other person that knows Katie and even in the brief time since she’s been at camp, she’s become the one I feel I can talk to the easiest.

“The truth is Marv,” I start to tell her. “I don’t feel mad at her. I can’t even get myself to feel mad at her. I want to discipline her so bad, teach her not to put herself in situations she had no business being in just because she feels she can.”

Marv hums before she says.

“I understand that. You are worried about her, you care about her, and that’s perfectly normal. As someone that has had the opportunity to discipline her, and I must say, yield results with that discipline, there is a bond that you both now have and she’s acting on it. She’s in a little space in this camp, not able to exact control her impulses without guidance,” Marv explains.

It’s as if she’s reading my mind and explaining the situation just as it is.

That moment with Katie in the rehab center, the discipline session, and the brief aftercare, it left a mark on me that I’ve been trying to figure out. I’ve not been able to get Katie out of my mind and all the things I wanted to do to her, for her. It’s insane and I don’t know what to do about it.

“And she would naturally gravitate and want to be around the only one that has been able to keep her in line.”

“But I’m not built for this life. I have no experience with it other than my work on this farm.
